MIKE WHEELER listens to Daniel Moult at the organ of Derby Cathedral
Two heavyweights among a group of lighter pieces made up freelance organ recitalist Daniel Moult's nicely-balanced programme for the second of this year's Derby Cathedral series (Derby, UK, 11 July 2012).
He piled on the registration a bit too heavily for the dense harmonic thicket at the beginning and end of Reger's Introduction and Passacaglia, but the stealthy opening of the Passacaglia was a model of clarity.
The skippy rhythms of the Fugue in G, BWV 577 generally attributed to J S Bach (Holst added 'à la Gigue' when he transcribed it for wind band, and the name stuck) contrasted neatly with the limpid grace and elegance Moult found in Mozart's Andante, K 616...
