Jonathan Dormand and Marisa Gupta's
Fauré, Brahms and Prokofiev

Fauré is in an unexpectedly spiky mood in the first movement of his Cello Sonata No 1. Cello and piano duo Jonathan Dormand and Marisa Gupta, two players in total rapport throughout the evening (Derby Chamber Music, Multi-Faith Centre, Derby University, Derby, UK, 12 October 2012), projected both the familiar and unfamiliar sides of the composer, with liquid smoothness where needed, as well as pointing up those moments where he almost seems to be keeping up with late Debussy. They caught the second movement's melancholy poise, conveying a sense of the music as an unbroken arc...
