A fine performance of Donizetti's
Lucia di Lammermoor' at Arizona Opera,
enjoyed by MARIA NOCKIN

 

Salvadore Cammarano (1801-1852) based the libretto for Gaetano Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor on Sir Walter Scott's novel, The Bride of Lammermoor. Scott based his 1819 novel on an incident that had occurred much earlier, and his book was published in the third group of a series called Tales of My Landlord. Its hero, Edgar, the Master of Ravenswood, blames Sir William Ashton for his family's ruin. The Ravenswoods were stripped of their title when they backed the losers in the Glorious Revolution and they lost their land to Sir William as a result of legal manipulations...
