Gaetano Donizetti
The Italian opera composer Gaetano Donizetti was born (29 November 1797) and died (8 April 1848) in Bergamo. He at first joined the Army to comply with parental wishes, but left as his early operas gained success. The first real success was Anna Bolena in 1830. Seven years later, and still writing operas, he was appointed director of the Naples Conservatoire. In 1844, as a result of syphilis, his physical and mental health deteriorated, leading to his death in 1848.
