MARIA NOCKIN visits Mexico
for Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore

On Friday 4 April 2014, Mexico's Ópera de Tijuana presented Gaetano Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore in the lovely San Jose Courtyard of the Tijuana Beaches' House of Culture. The space is outlined with old trees that spread their branches into cool green shade. Within the seating area there seemed to be about four hundred white chairs that sold for moderate prices. Outside the courtyard itself was an area for dining and drinking where a folk dance group performed various types of indigenous Mexican dances for the growing opera crowd...
