An Effervescent Delight
Donizetti's 'L'Elisir d'Amore'
impresses MIKE WHEELER
It's nine years since Opera North's production of L'Elisir d'Amore was last on the road. So it's been a real pleasure to check in again at the Hotel Adina, in an unspecified Italian coastal resort in the mid-1950s, where well-heeled tourists mix with the locals on the terrace, and Captain (in this production) Belcore and his fellow sailors burst in on Lambrettas (Opera North, Theatre Royal, Nottingham, UK, 10 March 2016).
Donizetti's glass of operatic prosecco gets a extra shot of soda in Daniel Slater's energetic production, with vivid characterisation not only from the principals but also every single member of the chorus, and with conductor Tobias Ringborg keeping everything light and airy...
