Gaetano Donizetti wrote three operas that deal with queens of the Tudor Period of British history. Anna Bolena tells of Anne Boleyn, the second wife of Henry VIII and the mother of Elizabeth I. Roberto Devereux deals with a supposed lover of Elizabeth I, and Maria Stuarda is about Mary, Queen of Scots, whom Elizabeth had executed. Scottish Queen Mary was born in 1542 and died in 1587...
