Poulenc was less than chivalrous or indeed merciful to his female operatic characters. Theresa had a couple of breasts that proved to be only balloons as they blew away, while his Carmelites were all deprived of their heads in one of the less attractive moments of the French Revolution. And now there is a wretched woman at the end of a telephone who tries in her despair to have some sort of conversation with the absent lover who is deserting her...
