Simon Rattle may not perhaps be associated with works of this type, but he certainly turns out a performance of Bizet's Carmen to be proud of. Comparisons with more famous versions such as those by Beecham (also on EMI) and Solti (on Decca) demonstrate that Rattle has applied a more traditionalist view to this evergreen work. With a choice cast of soloists he really hits the nail on the head in every respect...
