Small but perfectly formed, the European Union Chamber Orchestra (Assembly Rooms, Derby UK, 23 January 2013) consistently gives fresh, alert performances, which benefit from the physical freedom resulting from their practice of playing standing up.

The crisp attack with which they launched into Grieg's Holberg Suite was an instant attention-grabber, serving notice of the group's extraordinary rapport and collective energy decisively cued by their athletic director Hans-Peter Hofmann. Their extreme delicacy at a number of points in the second movement was just as compelling...
