Deeply Moving
Handel, Elgar and Mahler,
heard by MIKE WHEELER
I've never heard Derby Concert Orchestra sounding better (Derby Cathedral, Derby, UK, 16 March 2013). It was a measure of the impact made by their Romanian guest leader, Cristinel Bacanu, confirmed by chatting to some of the players during the interval and afterwards. The burnished string sound that caught my attention right at the start of the opening work -- the Overture in D minor by Handel orchestrated by Elgar -- boded well for Mahler's Symphony No 6 in the second half...
