Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610 in Derby Cathedral,
heard by MIKE WHEELER

In July 1973, Derby-based chamber choirs the Derwent Singers and Sitwell Singers pooled resources in Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610 in the Cathedral. The performance is still vividly remembered by many, and two members of the Sitwell Singers who sang then also took part when the two choirs got together to recreate the occasion, forty years on (Derby Cathedral, Derby, UK, 22 June 2013).

Conducted by the Sitwells' Malcolm Goldring, they made a bold, confident start in the opening Deus in Adjutorium, though the overall balance could have afforded to favour the instruments a bit more...
