OUTSTANDING PLAYING

-------------------------------

An organ recital by John Kitchen,
heard by MIKE WHEELER

This has to have been one of the freshest, most invigorating recitals in the Derby Cathedral organ series' almost thirty-year history (Derby, UK, 24 July 2013). Edinburgh City and University Organist John Kitchen's outstanding playing was accompanied by a breezy manner that instantly put the audience at its ease, with spoken introductions striking an ideal balance between the informative and the chatty.

The Overture and March from Handel's Ode for St Cecilia's Day made for a crisp, invigorating start before he launched into his contribution to the Krebs thread that runs through the recitals this year. He has recorded Krebs' complete organ music for the Priory label, and gave us a generous sample of his involvement with the composer, beginning with a group of three chorale-based pieces...
