  The importance of smaller companies which bring opera to outlying parts of the UK cannot be exaggerated. English National Opera, the Royal Opera, Opera North, Glyndebourne, Welsh National Opera and Scottish Opera -- and all of the last four tour regularly -- are the lifeblood and yardsticks of the nation's artistic standards.
