Endearingly Oddball

British music from Derby Choral Union,
including Britten's 'Rejoice in the Lamb',
heard by MIKE WHEELER

 

Derby Choral Union and conductor Richard Dacey chose Britten's Rejoice in the Lamb as their contribution to the composer's centenary festivities, surrounding it with other English choral music, from Parry to Howard Goodall (Derby Cathedral, Derby, UK, 16 November 2013).

Parry's I Was Glad got the evening off to a big, confident start and though some pitching issues started to creep in, the choir's climactic final chord, on the word 'palaces', was well taken.

Britten's endearingly oddball anthem-cum-cantata is also surprisingly moving...
