It is not a usual occurrence that you find Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto paired with the one by Schumann, so from the outset this CD is a very interesting proposition, if only for one to have the chance to gauge how these two different bedfellows can enjoy each other's company. To my happy surprise they make an excellent pair, even if the piece by Schumann may sound slightly flawed when compared to the Mendelssohn piece.Indeed, Barton Pine's heartfelt response to both slow movements is full of tonal beauty and accurate articulation, and her matchless virtuosity in the outer movements (of both concertos), combined with her flowing tempi and interpretive restraint suits the music to its very core...
