In the 1914-1918 War the organizer of the National Collection of Instruments and Music in YMCA huts was a Mr Herman Darewski. Many of these instruments went to military camps, to trenches in Europe or battleships plying Britain's naval approaches.

'This trombone' -- Edward Elgar wrote -- 'has clinging to it happy memories of my youthful music making. I meant to keep it, but why keep for sentiment when the "boys" can put it to use?'
