John Wilson conducts the CBSO,

Conductor John Wilson's phenomenal success, with his eponymous orchestra, in concerts of film music and musical theatre shouldn't be allowed to obscure his equal flair in symphonic repertoire, particularly British, which his concert with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra brilliantly demonstrated (Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham, UK, 23 January 2014).

Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance Marches 5, 3 and 4 (in that order) began the concert, in brisk performances full of crisp, incisive energy. The big trio tune of No 4 had breadth but no undue grandiosity...
