J S Bach's St John Passion in Derby Cathedral,
heard by MIKE WHEELER

 

Derby Cathedral Choir and conductor Peter Gould brought an expected level of commitment to their biennial performance of J S Bach's St John Passion (Derby Cathedral, Derby UK, 18 April 2014).

The choir's fresh, clear sound served Bach's vocal writing well, particularly in the vigour with which the choruses at the start of Part 2 were handled. The chorales were kept nicely on the move but without any sense of rush...
