As with every Ring Cycle, Götterdämmerung must always be the lynchpin that seals the sweeping drama of the story, and indeed, this final instalment of La Scala's great 2013 undertaking is just that. Maybe Guy Cassiers' production, setting the drama in the present, was a welcome shot in the arm for the final triumph, but most of the credit must go to Daniel Barenboim, who not only knows the score inside out but his superb conducting helped one and all to perceive the whole picture for what it really is.

The singing is at a constantly high level throughout, and the whole team not only sang but lived the characters to the very marrow of their existence...
