RODERIC DUNNETT looks back
to Worcester's 2014 Three Choirs Festival,
and forward to Hereford's Festival in July 2015

Even as the 2014 Three Choirs Festival at Worcester Cathedral reached a triumphant and bracing climax, Geraint Bowen, Artistic Director of the Hereford Three Choirs, was announcing plans for his appetising and eye-catching festival in 2015, three hundred years from the first recorded occasion. The 'meeting' of the three choirs (now choral societies) dates back to the early 1700s, just after the death of Queen Anne.

This is all the more impressive as Hereford might have been expected to keep its powder dry for the celebration of the actual three hundredth festival to be staged — a few were cancelled or mislaid, mainly in wartime — which Hereford will also host in a few years' time.

The heavyweights of this forthcoming Hereford festival, which opens on Saturday 25 July 2015, are Bach, Beethoven, Verdi and, of course, Elgar...
