Philip Glass (born 1937) is undoubtedly one of the pivotal American twentieth century composers, if only for his pioneering techniques where minimalism is concerned. Indeed there is something beautiful and powerful in his music that allows the listener to experience the purity of a single performer and a single instrument in a way that penetrates to the most profound depths of the human soul. Of the modern American composers like John Cage (1912-1992), Steve Reich (born 1936) and Terry Riley (born 1935), Glass is the only one to have successfully embraced the minimalist experiment, and had it accepted for performance by both concert orchestras and high class instrumentalists...
