At nearly one-hundred-and-one, Leif Solberg can be regarded as the grand old man of Norwegian music, but alas, history sometimes deals very cruelly and strangely with artists who, although talented, never seem to make any real headway in their careers. Solberg is a case in point. Yet although obscurity has attended his artistic endeavours, he is an important composer, a minor master yes, since his influence is very marginal, but a master nonetheless, a real craftsman whose sure-handed command in his writing and transparent sincerity mark him out as one who truly merits a wider audience.

Born in 1914 in Lena, Leif was the eldest of nine children, and his father, an ex-military musician, was already imparting lessons when his son was still finding his feet...
