JAMES SOHRE enjoyed Stephen Sondheim's
'Sweeney Todd' at San Francisco Opera

 

It is hard to argue with the boisterous, enthusiastic reception afforded to San Francisco Opera's Sweeney Todd.

But let me try.

A pre-eminent cast, an idiomatic reading in the pit, and a remarkably well-directed staging 'almost' made up for the fact that the amplification and sound design was patchy and uneven much of the night. Ironically, it proved limiting when it should have been liberating...
