Vocal music by
Wagner and Elgar -
'Sarah Rose Taylor's voice is warm and creamy.'
Generally I don't like romantic organ transcriptions, so I approached this disc with trepidation. The pieces here are quite challenging, not only considering how the organ would fare against Elgar and Wagner's masterful orchestrations. Nigel Potts is a remarkable organist, though, who lets his instrument breathe and does not make mushy waves of sound with sickening tremolo melodic lines, as has been so often the case with organ transcriptions of romantic music in the past.
The Wesendonk-Lieder are very well known in their orchestral guise, with many great recordings...
