Christmas music from The Sitwell Singers,
heard by MIKE WHEELER

 

When a choir has the nerve to adopt the so-called scrambled position (the voice-parts mixed up together) the tone gains in immediacy. The Sitwells sang much of their Christmas concert in this format, and the extra vibrancy to the sound was a real joy to hear (St John's Church, Derby, 14 December 2015).

The choir and conductor Malcolm Goldring repeated two items from last year's concert: Alan Spedding's early-baroque pastiche Omnis Mundus Iucundetur, to start the evening, and Ben Parry's double-choir, double-texted Make we Merry in Part 2, both sung with alert realisations of their dynamic and expressive contrasts...
