Giordano's 'Andrea Chénier', reviewed by MIKE WHEELER
I have to confess that verismo is my least favourite corner of the opera repertoire. This was my first encounter with Umberto Giordano's Andrea Chénier (Theatre Royal, Nottingham, 9 March 2016) and I'm in no hurry to meet it again.
The central character is an actual historical figure, a poet whose revolutionary sympathies aren't enough to save him from execution during the Terror that followed the French Revolution...
