and the Hallé Orchestra,

Does the Franco-Spanish duality of Chabrier's España mean that highlighting the one detracts from the other? Though conductor Jamie Phillips and the Hallé charged into the openly rumbustious moments with panache (Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham, UK, 2 June 2016), they were also alert to its Gallic elegance; some characterfully engaging woodwind chirrups at the start were particularly ear-catching.

Alexandra Dariescu's account of the solo part in Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No 1 had lashings of fire and temperament; I don't think I've ever heard those driving double octaves in the first movement played with such a mixture of blistering energy and pinpoint clarity...
