Bad boy director Calixto Bieito's provocative production of Carmen at San Francisco Opera has many memorable moments, almost all of them for the wrong reasons.
I have thrice been outraged by Mr Bieito's flippant indulgence but the only happy aspect about this self-centered production is that, trust me, it is my last encounter with this blatantly egotistic 'director'. For his Carmen is not about discovering any truths in Bizet's masterpiece, it is all — all — about calling attention to his directorial excesses and irrationalities.
And oh my, how 'shocking' he tries to be...
