San Francisco Opera knew what they were getting when they co-opted the Hamburgische Staatsoper's Jenůfa, and what they got was a riveting, stylized production of world-class stature.
Frank Philipp Schlössmann's production design is highly symbolic and provides a telling environment in which the story unfolds. On a triangular, raked platform of blond wooden planks, there is at first a large rock barely bursting through the floor. This suggests Jenůfa's illegitimate child, soon to emerge...
