Dvořák's Stabat Mater is an awkward piece. At around eighty minutes it is just about the longest setting of the text, ever. It was written in the wake of family tragedy (the deaths of three children), but however heart-felt his response, Dvořák seems to have allowed his growing facility as an instrumental composer to get the better of him...
