Sophisticated Elegance
GIUSEPPE PENNISI listens to music by Giacinto Scelsi
The Christmas / New Year holiday season is marked everywhere by rather standard musical offerings: The Nutcracker, Christmas music concerts, New Year concerts mostly imitating that in Vienna, Gospel concerts, Disney's Fantasia with live orchestra, as well as many initiatives of local interest only.
In Rome, I consider the real start of the musical year to be a very sophisticated and elegant concert on 8 January in the Santa Cecilia Music School, established in 1875, in the heart of the city center. The date marks the birthday of Giacinto Scelsi (1905-1988), celebrated every year with a concert by the Foundation he created in 1987 in the name of his sister Isabella to preserve his cultural estate. Scelsi, I believe, is not well known in the English speaking world, but his books, poems and music are very appreciated in Italy and in France...
