<< -- 4 -- Robert Anderson IRRESISTIBLY HAUNTING

It is Pelléas's last arctic night, and the young pair have met for a final farewell
beyond the gates of the ice castle. Oblivious of passing time, they know subconsciously they are
doomed. The gates clang to, and there is a brief illusion they are free of all social constraint.
But Mélisande hears a footfall, and it is indeed Golaud bent on his brother's murder
[watch and listen -- DVD2 chapter 10, 33:59-35:55].
The waxwork of Mélisande is on its deathbed, having given birth to a little daughter.
Golaud realises that the love of Pelléas and Mélisande had an innocence and
tenderness he could only now begin to comprehend. There was nothing there for tears, and
certainly not as Mélisande departs for a game of ball somewhere off stage
[watch and listen -- DVD2 chapter 14, 49:19-50:32].
