The English merchant Tobias Mill (Paolo Bordogna) lives apparently in an extensive warehouse, with dockland cranes dominating the view from his window. Bales of merchandise are scattered about, and the scene is surveyed by a stuffed polar bear, presumed evidence of a successful trading expedition in the past. Not that Mill shows much acquaintance with the world, baffled as he is by problems of latitude and longitude presented by his revolving globe. For the moment there are more pressing concerns, as his 'colonial correspondent' is about to arrive with proposals for a marital company. Mill sniffs profit.
