The organist George Thalben-Ball was born in Australia on 18 June 1896. He settled in England, and was for a time at the Temple Church in London. Yet his brilliance as a recitalist brought fame, and culminated in appointment as City Organist of Birmingham. His close link with the BBC and with The Daily Service further extended his popularity. He died on 18 January 1987.
