Born in Sydney, pianist John Talbot studied at the University of Queensland and the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, then (as first recipient of the Robert Dalley-Scarlett Memorial Scholarship) in the United Kingdom, where he now lives.
Talbot has a special interest in the music of early twentieth century British composers, especially E J Moeran, and he prepared and edited a thirteen-volume Centenary Edition of Moeran's vocal, keyboard and choral music (published by Thames, now Music Sales), which is in its second edition.
He was Artistic Adviser to the 1994 Tudeley Festival, which celebrated the centenary of Moeran's birth, and has recorded Moeran's complete solo piano music for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. His commercial discography includes Moeran's Violin Sonata with Donald Scotts and Moeran's Complete Solo Songs with Geraldine McGreevy, Adrian Thompson and Roderick Williams, both for Chandos, and (on the British Music Society's label) English Cello Sonatas (John Foulds, Ernest Walker and York Bowen) with Jo Cole, October Roses - solo songs by Brian Blyth Daubney, with Anna Dennis and William Berger, and E J Moeran Complete Solo Folksong Arrangements with Adrian Thompson and Marcus Farnsworth.
