German cellist and conductor Michael Sanderling was born in Berlin on 21 February 1967, to bass player Barbara Sanderling and conductor Kurt Sanderling. Michael began studying cello at the age of five, and his teachers have included Matthias Pfaender, Josef Schwab, William Pleeth, Yo-Yo Ma, Gary Hoffmann and Lynn Harrell.
He ended his career as a solo cellist in 2010 to devote his time to teaching and conducting. He is principal conductor of the Dresdner Philharmonie.
