The Soviet Experience

Cedille Records has re-released its Soviet Experience series, featuring all the Shostakovich string quartets plus quartets by his contemporaries Nikolai Miaskovsky, Sergei Prokofiev, Mieczyslaw Weinberg and Alfred Schnittke, in a low-budget '8 CDs for the price of 2' box set (BOX 1003). All the recordings have been made by the Pacifica Quartet.

The recordings had been previously released, between 2011 and 2014, as four separate volumes, each containing two CDs. In this previous incarnation, each volume was reviewed, separately, in Music & Vision, by Andrew Schartmann (... virtuoso passages leap off the page with excitement ...') and the late Howard Smith ('... vivid sonic immediacy'). Read their reviews by following these links: Volume I, Volume II, Volume III and Volume IV.

Chicago's Cedille Records, founded in 1989, produces high quality recordings of new and under-represented compositions, plus important interpretations of standard classical repertoire, using musicians from Chicago. The company never deletes recordings from its catalogue, so each CD remains available perpetually.

The Pacifica Quartet is a professional string quartet whose members live in Bloomington, Indiana, USA, where Pacifica is quartet-in-residence at the Jacobs School of Music and the four players - Simin Ganatra, Sibbi Bernhardsson, Masumi Per Rostad and Brandon Vamos - are full-time faculty members. The quartet has been in operation since 2002, making its first tour with the complete Elliott Carter cycles, encompassing Chicago, Edinburgh, Los Angeles and New York City.
