'... one almost gets the smell of Renaissance Spain.'

Under the Spell of Spain. © 2011 Superbrass

The British brass scene has seldom lacked for players willing to organise and front star-quality groups to further the brass cause -- Philip Jones, James Shepherd and Leslie Lake readily spring to mind, but there are plenty of others. The latest to take on the challenge is Roger Argente, Bass Trombonist with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Head of Brass at Trinity College of Music. In both the booklet notes and an article in Brass Herald magazine, Argente readily acknowledges the influence of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble and the lineage through that and London Brass to Superbrass. Superbrass seems to use basically the same 4 trumpet-horn-4 trombone-tuba lineup as the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, but on this disc the writers have not spared the use of percussion either...
