A Great Evening

Beethoven and Dallapiccola from
Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Philharmonia Orchestra,
heard by BILL NEWMAN

 

What has Beethoven to do with Dallapiccola? I heard one lady say, following the greatest of all Fifth Symphonies: 'Darling, don't we have enough of Beethoven 5?' I could have strangled her, but refrained from comment.

Esa-Pekka Salonen directed a strong performance of the work, omitting the repeats in the second and fourth movements -- which he was quite justified in doing, as it would otherwise have delayed the tensions for the music about to shock the listeners visually and aurally, in the concert's second half...
