In these two works Couperin plays entertaining tricks with the French and Italian styles of composition current at the time. Bach did likewise, writing his Italian Concerto for keyboard and also six French Suites. But Bach supplemented these works with half a dozen English Suites as well, a timely reminder that Purcell too had juggled these traditions with wonderful success at a slightly earlier period...
