F W Murnau's 'Faust'
impresses BILL NEWMAN

I found this [F W Murnau's 'Faust', 27 February 2012] an interesting and exciting event. Uncertain whether the 1926 silent film would succeed with a brand new score composed by Aphrodite Raickopoulou, with the world famous Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Benjamin Wallfisch, and the well-known pianist-improviser Gabriela Montero on stage at the Royal Festival Hall in London, all I was required to do was watch and listen from my Grand Tier seat! Following Hugh Grant's typically witty introduction, the film pictures Faust as an old man, dissastisfied with life, seated in his domain, saddened by his past and seeking redemption. Mephisto and his entourage in the form of skeletons descend from the darkened sky, their evil countenances aware of what they intend to happen...
