Musorgsky arranged by Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky and Musorgsky arranged by Ravel
Royal Festival Hall, London, UK, 19 April 2012

The programme commenced with Dawn over the Moskva River (Prelude to Musorgsky's Khovantschina), revealing the delicate string and woodwind textures of the Philharmonia players. Slovakian conductor Juraj Valcuha holds the post of the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI, Turin, and studied composition, conducting and cimbalon in Bratislava and St Petersburg with Ilya Musin, and in Paris. He really understands how to get the very best from players, and is well admired by this orchestra.

The eagerly awaited reappearance of Sergey Khachatryan, the young violinist from Yerevan, Armenia, produced a buzz around the hall...
