BEAUTY OF TONE

Danill Trifonov's prizewinner's concert from the
Arthur Rubinstein Piano Master Competition,
reviewed by BILL NEWMAN

In addition to the thirteenth Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition in 2011, Russian pianist Danill Trifonov has also won the Gold Medal First Prize of the International Tchaikovsky Competition (Moscow, 2011) and the Bronze Medal and Special Award of the International Fryderyck Chopin Piano Competition (Warsaw, 2010).

Tatiana Zelikman from the famous Moscow Gnessin School of Music, who also taught Lifschitz, Kobrin and Volodin, became his teacher from the age of five. He was also taught composition studies in piano, chamber and orchestral music at the same time, and since 2009 has studied piano at the Cleveland Institute of Music in the class of Sergei Babayan.

The two Liszt arrangements of Schubert Songs with which he commenced the programme at London's Wigmore Hall on 14 March 2012 -- Frühlingsglaube and Die Stadt -- possessed a wonderful fluency commensurate with some of the finest Russian and European artists of the past...
