Christoph von Dohnányi has led an illustrious career as one of the world's foremost maestros. On one occasion he questioned the old school of conductors in the shape of Wilhelm Furtwängler on BBC Radio 3, saying that he remembers 'this old man on the podium who audiences revered at the time ... well that was maybe correct but we do not perform great music like that nowadays'...
