MALCOLM MILLER looks forward
to the Wagner bicentenary and
back to a semi-staged performance of
Jonathan Harvey's 'Wagner Dream'

With the Wagner bicentenary fast approaching in 2013, one of the less obvious highlights of the year is sure to be Welsh National Opera's forthcoming staging of 'Wagner Dream' by Jonathan Harvey, scheduled for June 2013. Happily, the production by Pierre Audi and designer Jean Kalman, promises to be as exciting as their world premiere, one of the highlights of the 2007 Holland Festival (see Ravishing Beauty -- Harvey's 'Wagner Dream' at the Holland Festival in Amsterdam). It is a timely moment to reflect on the work, given its UK semi-staged premiere as part of the BBC's Immersion Day held at the Barbican Centre, London UK, earlier in 2012.

The UK concert premiere was admirable since it offered UK audiences a chance to hear one of Jonathan Harvey's best, and most essentially Buddhist dramatic works...
