Toward the Light opens with Handel's Oh Had I Jubal's Lyre and ends twelve tracks later with Schubert's similarly popular Ave Maria. The intervening ten items are selected from the best known of Franck, Quilter, Brahms, Gluck and Wagner.
Roger Quilter's lyrics are derived from Nora Hopper (1871-1906), viz:
Dark red roses in a honeyed wind swinging,
Silk-soft hollyhock, coloured like the moon;
Larks high overhead lost in light, and singing;
That's the way of June...
