Writer and broadcaster Stephen Johnson's latest live 'Discovering Music' evening explored Sibelius' Fourth Symphony, with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor John Storgårds to provide illustrations, and give a complete performance afterwards (Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham, UK, 15 May 2013).
No 4 has the reputation of being the most remote and austere of Sibelius' symphonies, but Stephen Johnson rounded out the picture to show what a limited view of the work this is. In Finland, he said, it is regarded in much the same light as Beethoven's late quartets...
