Enjoyably Daft
MIKE WHEELER experiences Mozart's 'La Finta Giardiniera' at Buxton
Mozart's La Finta Giardiniera (The Girl Disguised as a Gardener) was first staged in 1775, five years before the break-through of Idomeneo. The music is delightful, though not particularly memorable, and there's the fascination of watching the future composer of Figaro and Così fan tutte stretching his wings (Buxton Festival, Buxton Opera House, Buxton UK, 6 July 2013).
The plot is a convoluted story of false identity and complex romantic entanglements. Director Harry Fehr has come up with a modern-day re-imagining of the original scenario that mostly works superbly well...
