The Gough Duo at Derby Cathedral
impresses TONY WESTERMAN

 

Rachel and Rupert Gough have established a well-deserved reputation as musicians of international standing, performing in a wide range of venues from the Far East to Moscow and the United States. Violin and organ duos are not common in the twenty-first century and one wondered if a whole programme of arrangements was viable. However, any misgivings were overcome within the first few bars of Rheinberger's Ouverture, Op 150, No 6.

The generous acoustic in Derby Cathedral [7 August 2013] captured the melifluous tone of Rachel Gough's violin (Joseph Klox, 1791) carrying the soaring melodies to every part of the building; this was clearly a very special instrument in the hands of a sensitive musician who knew how to exploit the entire range of its musical qualities from the quietest pianissimo to a surprisingly robust forte...
